2026 election transition notice

Public reporting identifies Consuela Hunter as the winner of the June 2026 mayoral election and as mayor-elect. Until the official state officeholder record changes, this page distinguishes “mayor-elect” from “current mayor.” It does not state that an incoming official is already subject to a recall petition.

Louisiana Revised Statutes 18:1300.1 and following

How a mayor can be recalled in Louisiana

  1. 1Louisiana generally permits public officers, other than judges, to be recalled. A petition cannot be accepted for certification when less than six months remain in the term.
  2. 2A recall petition must be directed to the Governor and may concern only one public officer.
  3. 3The petition must clearly state the reason or reasons for the proposed recall.
  4. 4A chairman and vice-chairman must be designated, and both must be qualified voters in the voting area.
  5. 5Before any signatures are entered, the chairman must file the signed petition copy and required identity or address documents with the Louisiana Secretary of State.
  6. 6Do not collect signatures before the Secretary of State filing process is complete and the official filing and endorsement date is received.
  7. 7Recall petition signatures must be handwritten.
  8. 8The required percentage depends on the number of qualified electors in the voting area.
  9. 9For a voting area with 1,000 to 24,999 qualified electors, the law currently requires 33 1/3 percent of qualified electors.
  10. 10The official number must come from the Registrar of Voters. This page does not estimate it.
  11. 11When at least 1,000 qualified electors reside in the area, the completed petition generally must reach the Registrar no later than 180 days after filing with the Secretary of State.
  12. 12The Registrar of Voters verifies signatures under the statutory process.
  13. 13If enough qualified-elector signatures are certified, the petition proceeds through the process for calling a recall election.
  14. 14At the election, Rayville voters make the decision.
  15. 15If a majority votes for recall and the result becomes final, the office is vacated and filled under Louisiana law.
